Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez is the daughter of
Eduardo Cruz, a Madrid hairdresser, and Encarna Sanchez. As a child and a
devoted performer who would recreate commercials on TV for the entertainment of
her family. However, she chose to dedicate her time to dancing. After nine
years of classical ballet instruction in Spain's National Conservatory she was
able to continue her dance training under the direction of several prominent
dancers. Her true calling was discovered at 15 years old when she defeated more
than 300 other girls in an audition held by a talent agency. The agency offered
her roles in Spanish TV and music videos. This brought her many roles, which
opened the door to a career in the world of big screens. Cruz made her debut
film in 1993's The Greek Labyrinth (The Greek Labyrinth). After that, she
briefly made an appearance in Framed (1992), a Timothy Dalton thriller. Her
final film was an Oscar-winning film, Belle Epoque (1992), where she played one
of the four sisters competing for the affections of a handsome deserter from
the Army. The film also earned several Goyas that are the Spanish equivalent of
the Academy Awards. Cruz became a renowned Spanish actor with her three- to
four films per year increasing resume. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered
her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who
would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the
lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a
huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). In 1998, her
luck changed when she took home a Best Actress Goya for the industry-related
movie comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998). Cruz also made a few ventures into
film in the English language, but her biggest international hit was Almodovar's
All About My Mother (1999), in which she played an unassuming but very
well-meaning nun. When the film was lavishly adorned with awards and accolades,
Cruz was suddenly highly sought-after across both sides of the Atlantic. Her
next film was Woman on Top (2000) which is an American comedy about a cook who
is enchanting in her cooking skills as well as a severe case motion sickness.
